The Tribute in Light is an installation of 88 searchlights placed next to the site of the World Trade Center to create two vertical columns of light in remembrance of the September 11 attacks.

The photograph was taken from the Brooklyn Bridge Park as the moon sets over the Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge. The sun rises from the opposite direction shining onto downtown Manhattan and the East River. Construction continues on One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) which is lit Red, White, and Blue (blue and white can be seen in photo).

One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) is scheduled to be completed in 2013 and it will be the tallest building in the United States, with its radio antenna reaching a symbolic height of 1,776 feet in reference to the year of American independence. (Source- Wikipedia One World Trade Center).

Irene Takes The Life Of A Holocaust Survivor

An 82 year-old Holocaust survivor and grandmother drowned August 28 in a Catskills cottage after it was overtaken with floodwater caused by Hurricane Irene, The New York Daily News reports.

New York State Police Investigator Jeffrey Moore said more than 6 feet of water filled the woman’s cottage at the Valkyrian Motel located in Fleischmanns, NY.

Isaac Abraham, a Brooklyn Hasidic community leader told The Daily News that Stern-Gluck was born in Russia and survived the Holocaust. “She survived Hitler, but she couldn’t survive Irene,” he said.

Cuomo said:

Damage “close to $1 billion”

22 state bridges have been closed

more than 600 homes destroyed

New York farms suffered at least $45 million in damage with 140,000 acres destroyed

150 major highways damaged

Quote: “There are two realities to what Irene did to New York. One reality was that New York City and Long Island—in some ways we celebrated that the damage wasn’t as bad as it could have been. There’s an exactly opposite reality in upstate New York.”

Quote: ““The damage that we have sustained is significant, and sometimes the bottom line is the bottom line. We need help on the economics. We’ll bring the energy, we’ll bring the commitment, we’ll bring the drive, we’ll bring the know-how, but these are not communities of deep pockets”

President Obama announced today a federal disaster declaration for eight counties where individuals and households can receive federal assistance. They are Albany, Delaware, Dutchess, Essex, Greene, Schenectady, Schoharie, and Ulster counties.
