Irene Takes The Life Of A Holocaust Survivor

An 82 year-old Holocaust survivor and grandmother drowned August 28 in a Catskills cottage after it was overtaken with floodwater caused by Hurricane Irene, The New York Daily News reports.

New York State Police Investigator Jeffrey Moore said more than 6 feet of water filled the woman’s cottage at the Valkyrian Motel located in Fleischmanns, NY.

Isaac Abraham, a Brooklyn Hasidic community leader told The Daily News that Stern-Gluck was born in Russia and survived the Holocaust. “She survived Hitler, but she couldn’t survive Irene,” he said.

Prattsville NY- New York Governor Andrew Cuomo visited Prattsville on August 31. Gov. Cuomo said that he expected damage in the state from Tropical Storm Irene to reach “close to $1 billion”.

Cuomo said:

Damage “close to $1 billion”

22 state bridges have been closed

more than 600 homes destroyed

New York farms suffered at least $45 million in damage with 140,000 acres destroyed

150 major highways damaged

Quote: “There are two realities to what Irene did to New York. One reality was that New York City and Long Island—in some ways we celebrated that the damage wasn’t as bad as it could have been. There’s an exactly opposite reality in upstate New York.”

Quote: ““The damage that we have sustained is significant, and sometimes the bottom line is the bottom line. We need help on the economics. We’ll bring the energy, we’ll bring the commitment, we’ll bring the drive, we’ll bring the know-how, but these are not communities of deep pockets”

President Obama announced today a federal disaster declaration for eight counties where individuals and households can receive federal assistance. They are Albany, Delaware, Dutchess, Essex, Greene, Schenectady, Schoharie, and Ulster counties.

Irene News: Gilboa Dam

From Wikipedia:

On August 28, 2011, after receiving as much as 12 inches (300 mm) of rainfall from Hurricane Irene, the Gilboa Dam was placed in a level B situation.Though the dam was intact, the heavy upstream rainfall from the hurricane prompted officials to issue an evacuation order for downstream residents, including a mandatory evacuation of the towns of Middleburgh and Schoharie. The evacuation order was due to the heavy rainfall and not due to a dam failure. After a minor earthquake on August 27, 2011 was recorded in the region and in response to the 2011 Virginia earthquake which occurred on August 23, 2011, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered an infrastructure inspection which included the Gilboa Dam.Governor Cuomo visited the dam on the morning of August 28, 2011 to report that officials had discovered no impacts to the dam from recent seismic activity. Tour of the Catskills 2011

The Tour of the Catskills is one of America’s premier cycling events held in the heart of the Catskill Mountains in scenic Upstate New York.  Held over 3 days, beginning with a Friday individual time trial, and two epic road stages on Saturday and Sunday in Greene and Ulster Counties, the event captures the essence of the history, culture, and scenery of the Catskill Mountains. The addition of the famed ‘Devil’s Kitchen Climb’ in 2010 established the event as one of America’s toughest cycling events for amateurs and professionals alike.

Organizers of the 2011 Tour of the Catskills are proud to announce that at least 22 States will be represented at this weekend’s 4th annual road cycling event in the Catskills Mountains of New York State.  Nearly 700 racers are currently registered and more than 800 are expected by the start of the event on Friday in Hunter.

The 3-day race begins on Friday, August 5 with the 12-mile, Stage 1 Individual Time Trial in Hunter.
