Decided to drive to Mount Utsayantha as the clouds looked very lovely throughout the day. Arrived at the top of Mount Utsayantha about 30 minutes before this particular image was taken. All the photos prior to this image looked good and I was happy.

I was already back at the car when the rosy light appeared and gazed over Stamford. The Thomas Cole sundown lasted a few minutes. I stepped back to the overlook and was able to photograph several images before the light watchfully dissipated allowing the stars to sparkle through the ever moving clouds.

This is my second favorite cloud cover over Stamford that I have captured. Favorite

The Tribute in Light first ran as a temporary installation from March 11 to April 14, 2002. The Tribute in Light was launched again in 2003 to mark the second anniversary of the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center. As of 2010,  the Tribute in Light has been repeated every year on September 11. It was announced that 2008 would be the Tribute in Light’s  final year. The tribute was continued in 2009 and on December 17, 2009 it was confirmed that the Tribute in Light would continue through to the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks in 2011. Bastion Falls is located on Route 23A and is at the start of the trail-head for Kaaterskill Falls. This week Bastion Falls brought many cars to a stop on Route 23A because of the recent wet weather as they drove on the hairpin curve (View image) that passes this roadside waterfall.

The top image of Bastion Falls was taken from Route23A on a bridge that crosses Spruce Creek.

The next image was taken near the trail register for the Kaaterskill Falls Trail.

While driving along Route 23 the moving landscape almost seems as if it was “photoshoped”. I see the grass is exceedingly green, the roadway slick as if used in a car commercial, and the sky deep blue. There has been a tremendous quantity of rainfall in the Catskill Region causing roads to fail and creeks to pour out. After one heavy shower of many in recent weeks, Route 23 was closed because of a known slope failure along the roadway. A mound of dirt standing nearly 30 feet high was trucked into the area the following day.

I made a trip to Kaaterskillfalls Falls during a break from all the rain. Many cars driving along “Horseshoe Bend” on Route 23A slowed down to glimpse Bastion Falls in its surging splendor. The people in the cars snapped photos enthusiastically from the window. The flow of the roadside waterfalls has been incredibly strong. Seasonal waterfalls normally dry this time of year have sprung to life.

As I walked to the trail of Kaaterskill Falls and stood on the stairway of stones that mark the beginning of the trail I spoke to one hiker making the return trip. He stated a woman was frantic after thinking her kids were sweep away from the sheer force of the creek. The hiker and his wife searched for the 2 kids as the woman cried thinking the most horrible. It turned out the kids were only full of energy and marched ahead of their Mother racing to Kaaterskill Falls to see the grand prize.

We entered Platte Clove Road from the bottom by car. For being a beautiful summer day there were no cars parked at Becker Road. On days such as this in the past years there would be sometimes a dozen and half cars parked as the people enjoyed the local swimming holes of Lower Platte Clove. The reasons for the lack of parked cars are the recent additions of restrictive “No Parking” signs. To assist with the signs are big boulders and rocks on the shoulder of the road that have been newly added to block people from parking their cars at Platte Clove.

As we continued up Platte Clove Road we quickly noticed many of the seasonal waterfalls were full of life. Water was dripping off many of the rocks. In some cases the water was pouring off. On one of the several vehicle pull offs of Platte Clove Road we parked safely and got out to explore one of the seasonal water falls located in Platte Clove.

I descended by foot into Platte Clove from the road and found an abandon car probably from an unfortunate accident.

Earth, rocks, weeds have encompassed the car. The car appears to be at one with Platte Clove.

Devils Kitchen is great spot especially after a lot of rain. The water runs strong and everything is green. The top photo is my father standing on top of a Devils Kitchen boulder. The middle photo shows the path down into the depths of Platte Clove. And the third is favorite of mine. It is the view from under the Stone Bridge.
