Nearby to Sphinx Rock is a beautiful view of the upper section of Kaaterskill Falls. On our way to Sphinx Rock we located what we believe to be Prospect Rock seeing both the upper and lower sections of Kaaterskill Falls. However tree growth at Prospect Rock made the view obstructed.

Kaaterskill Falls Information: Kaaterskill Falls is a two-drop waterfall located  in the eastern Catskill Mountains of New York (on the north side of Kaaterskill Clove). The dual cascades of Kaaterskill Falls total 260 feet (79 m) in height, making it one of the higher waterfalls in New York.

The Laurel House (1852-1967) acquired the water rights to Spruce Creek and dammed it during tourist season, charging spectators below the falls a fee to watch as the waters were unleashed and the falls “turned on”. (Link: Wikipedia- Kaaterskill Falls)

Remnants of this dam can be observed along Spruce Creek. There is evidence of at least 2 locations where 2 dams existed. The pictures below show the much larger dam that once dammed the waters of Spruce Creek.

My father and I had a successful hike yesterday into Kaaterskill Falls where we were able to reach the top of the first tier of Kaaterskill Falls. Today we drove back to the Kaaterskill Falls area and parked in a different location where we could walk to the top of Kaaterskill Falls. There are many rock engravings found at and near the ledge of Kaaterskill Falls.

It was very bright and sunny on the top of the falls. The view was great. I was able to take several nice photos. We walked around the top area Kaaterskill Falls looking for the remains of the Laurel House. We were unable to find anything substantial however we did not know exactly to where to start. Our point of the reference is the well published image of the Laurel House with Kaaterskill Falls in the fore front.

We also walked about a mile on a trail that used to have railroad tracks. We came across several locations that were very steep and rugged where we found evidence of bridges and stone passes for the train and railroad.

My father and I hiked to Kaaterskill Falls. The weather was beautiful and the water flow from Kaaterskill was very strong. There was about a dozen cars in the parking area when we first got there. As we hiked in several people walked past us heading back to the start of the trail. When we reached Kaaterskill Falls we were the only two people at the falls for about 15 minutes or so. We had Kaaterskill Falls all to ourselves. After several photos we walked up to the top of the first tier (lower falls). I would not suggest this as it is past the end of the trail and it is also very steep and dangerous. Many people have perished from falling at Kaaterskill Falls.

I took a lot of photos of the trail, the lower falls. I did not take any 360 images.
